If it is new that should be a warranty fix.

When the axis tries to find zero the motor drives it slowly until the limit switch is operated . Then the motor reverses and drives it slowly until the switch is released and as soon as the switch releases the controller starts looking for a zero position pulse from the encoder. What happens to cause the 168 alarm is that the pulse occurs quicker than the controller expects.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

parameter 128 if it is a brushless unit the value should be -16384, zero or positive 16384 one of those 3 values should work. if it is a brush type unit then either -1000, 0, or 1000 should work. there is a way to do it in debug if you have newer software on the machine and the haas will figure out the grid offset by itself. but it is a little longer to explain if it one of those values does not work i will tell you how to do it in debug

i would check my a axis offsets if you have any you want to zero return it quite a bit to make sure that the dist to go is repeating on the position page changing the grid offset does affect the zero position but not by much.
