Upgrading a 1993 VF3????

Hello to all,
I am new here to cnc zone and I can't wait to utililize all of the info on here.

I have a 1993 VF3 that I have had for about 6 years now. I am drip feeding all my programs now via RS232. All my programs are complex 3d surfacing programs (Molds, and patterns), so my programs are around 50mb to 250mb in size. One program might run for 50 hours with 10 different tools. I am wondering if it is worth it to upgrade the memory on the machine and add ethernet/hdd or what my best option would be. The machine is just way to jumpy/jittery when running such complex programs via rs232. I am buying a 1998 milltronics that has a 256mb compact flash for hard drive and 256mb of ram, on this machine I will be able to load my large programs via ethernet to the hardrive and run from the controller without drip feeding. I would like to do the same with my haas if it is possible. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!!!

sco999:

The maximum baud rate on your machine is 38.4 kbaud, are you using this rate?

Also you may want to leave out all redundant data and shorten your blocks.

For example:

N100 G01 X0.010 Y0.001
N110 G01 X0.010 Y0.004

should be output as

G01 only once until a change is needed
X100Y10
Y40

Your UART setup should be 7 data bits, EVEN parity, 1 stop bit, 38.4 kbaud.

No HAAS does not provide minor upgrades to the old machines.

If you are at 9600 baud you will probably encounter stuttering on short strokes.

If your cable is more than 6' long you may have high baud rate problems.

We have products that provide electrical isolation, high baud rate capability, and long cable length simultaneously. See our web site www.beta-a2.com. The I232 System just takes RS232 data from your computer and transfers this to RS232 at your CNC with the above features. We have a number of mold makers that make effective use of this system. One customer has jobs that may run continuously for 3 days. Before installing our I232 there was a major stuttering problem, and data errors that required restart. After installing the I232 System there were no more errors and stuttering was essentially eliminated.
