my mini mill will lock up occasionally when accessing the USB. I have to turn the machine off and back on.
has anyone experienced this, is it normal? is there a way to reset without turning off the machine?
thanks

What kind of device are you putting in to the USB port?

If the HAAS RESET button does not clear the problem, then call HAAS and tell them to fix their buggy software. Machine power off should not be required.
.
What software version is in the machine? I have two machines with USB ports and have not encountered this problem (so far).
Are you just transferring programs or are you DNCing from the USB?
Do you know what key sequence initiates the lock up?
Are there rules for accessing a file system on a USB on a Haas? For example, observing the 8 character filename, 3 character file extension name of DOS?
Is your thumbdrive a simple model without any kind of 'file security' software installed on it?

My experience is that the 8/3 DOS style file name protocol is still necessary; but I think this is a Haas thing. The USB drives I used have the security software on them in a separate folder. The machine 'sees' the folder but I did not try to open this folder, my programs were in the root directory.
I have done USB machine to machine transfers; that is download a program from a machine onto the USB drive and then onto anothrer machine. Also floppy to USB transfers by downloading to a floppy, copying to a USB drive and then loading to another machine. Actually my guys are doing this on a routine basis now to bring a new machine into operation on our full range of programs. So far we have never had a hang up.

Either you have a hardware problem, or HAAS has a software problem.
You should be able to make any sort of mistake that would cause the processor to lock-up and be able to recover processor operation with the RESET key.
HAAS could do this thru the RESET key by a power-on reset of the processor without powering down the machine, or by a non-maskable interrupt. A power-on reset of the processor would not necessarily mean it would be necessary to go thru the entire normal start-up that occurs on an actual machine power-on.

My money is on a software problem. Since you have the USB option, I assume you are still under warranty, and get THEM to look at it. I've had the software upgraded twice because of corrupt files and such. Problems been gone for a while now.

I have this same problem too with my USB/HD/ Ethernet option in my VF2SS. I have to power off and reboot to clear it. Happened many times already. Haas advised me to do a few things to remedy this but nothing really worked. I'm actually pretty fed up at this point so I'm going to just get rid of this machine. I'm not going to waste anymore time with this thing. Since it's a Haas it will sell fast. 10 month old. In the long run, I think I would have been better off paying a little more for a better machine.
Now in Windows, one needs to tell the system that one is "demounting" a drive, even if it is a USB drive. And, Windows has "plug and play", so you'd think it could figure it out by itself.
So the Haas cnc, being some version of DOS I suppose, must necessarily have even greater troubles with this automatic mount/dismount of USB thumbdrives, unless there is a specific option to inform the system that the thumb drive is about to 'leave'. How do they do it?

Hu is right. When is he ever wrong![]()
Did you make sure you pressed ORIGIN before removing the USB drive? I think it is ORIGIN; a tiny little message shows up on the screen telling you to push something before removing the drive. It only shows on one of my machines which is a bit funny. Even funnier is that it is the older machine does not have this message.
