    Questions: TL-1 and options

I'm getting close to purchasing a TL-1 with the following options:

    Tailstock
    Spindle Orientation
    Floppy Drive
    Rigid tapping
    Coolant pump

I've read the pros/cons on this machine and I think it is a good fit for what I need to do.

My question is what do I do for tool holding. The options are:

    1. regular CXA toolpost
    2. manual indexing tool post (Quadra etc)
    3. Dorian manual turret
    4. Haas TT1 4 position automatic tool changer

I'm leaning toward option #4, but I have some concerns.

    1. how repeatable is it? I'll have a boring bar hanging out 6"
    2. how do I mount drills on it?

    Opinions, comments concerns?

The Haas four place tool turret has good repeatability. Certainly within +/-0.0001" on a turning tool. For indexing it with a long boring bar you may need to find another location for the mounting of the coolant nozzle. It normally goes on the cross slid just ahead of the toolpost and long tools will hit it. For holding drills I made my own holders.

Have you read the various threads/posts about the TL1 in the Haas forum? I posted some pictures which showed the tool holders I made.

I have read all the posts that I could find. The only photos I found were of a TL-1 with the full enclosure kit.

Can you let me know which thread has the photos?

Also, does the TL-1 have temperature compensation?

    Thanks

    Mike

Just as easy to post again.

I don't know about temp comp. It might be available as an option but the TL1 is sooooo slooowww I cannot see that it would need temp comp.

    Thanks.

I was asking about temp comp on the ballscrews. The SL series has it.

True and the SLs have 710ipm rapids or something like that, a 12 tool turret with a 1 second tool change, hydraulic chuck and you can run it with a bar feed so you are spitting out parts every minute or so and doing tool changes every few seconds. I cannot see a TL1 ever moving far enough and fast enough that the ball screws are going to warm significantly above ambient temperature.

You will find that the 4 way toolpost limits your turning diameter(check your specs),We have a TL-2 and we stuck with the quick change tool post an it find it repeatable to with in .01mm sure it is a bit slower but at 7,000-10,000 cheaper. The tailstock is a bit of a pain to move with the encloser on(you just cannot get in)so you may want to hook up somthing to move it with the saddle,I have also heard of people replacing the grease nipples wit air fittings and have a Tap and just turn the air on and slide on an air cusion( i will need to try this).
I would rather be riding my harley!!!

The trucks on the linear guides run on ball bearings. I cannot see how anyone can expect them to slide on an air cushion by doing this.

I don't think that air cusion thing is possible. The trucks are preloaded. There is no clearance to float on. Plus unless there is going to be oil in that air how would the trucks get lubricated?

For my opinion, you could forget the coolant pump as it's too much expensive for the worth. Get you a coolant pump kit from KBC tool instead and built you a custom bin (an old electrical panel can do the job) and take the pump from the kit to put on it. Don't forget that without the enclosure, it would do a little mess to your shop floor.

I have the Dorian turret and I like it since I don't do production job. And with the Haas TT1, you will not be able to put the turret at angle on a special boring job in example. And if you'll have to remove it to put a manual turret for a special job, it will take you alots of time.

Maybe another thing that make me change my mind when I bought mine is the bore size. On the TL-2 you'll have a 3" of bore hole for let say 10k$ more, but for my opinion, that's worth it.
