    1994 haas vf2 error codes 161 139 103

Last month I posted having an x shift. I think it was trying to tell me something. Last few weeks on start up x has been throwing 139 error homing out. Once I was going it was fine. Today it wouldn't home and I got 103 X following error 139 x motor z fault and a 161 x axis over current or drive fault. I pull the front cover and my x cable housing is broke. Wires are intact. I guess my question is should I just replace the cable or could have I screwed up encoder, motor and board? Also who has the best price on parts that I can get reasonably fast? How do I move the table without homing the machine? Thanks.

At this point you have to decide if time or money is more important. Your HFO will usually have the parts you need in stock. If you call in a tech, they will replace parts one at a time and only charge you for the ones he needs. Depending on their service schedule, this could be your quickest option.

If money is more important, buy the cable first and see if that takes care of the problem; it needs to be replaced anyhow based upon your description. Next focus on the encoder for the motor.

For the type of parts you will need for this repair, just buy the parts from your dealer. You probably won't beat their prices even if you do find them somewhere else. If they don't have them in stock, they are always available next day air.

Good luck! Report back what you find.

Money is an issue. That being said would you order a cable and encoder. Is there a way to test the encoder?

One thing you can try, is to remove the motor from x axis and make sure that you get the same alarms with nothing connected to the motor shaft.

Next, connect the motor from the x-axis and plug it into the y-axis cable and see if you get the same alarms. If you get the same alarms, then it is probably the encoder. You will have to disable the x-axis in parameters in order for the machine to ignore the open cable connections for this test.

Make sure the machine is in E-Stop when disconnecting/connecting motor cables.

Either way, plan to order a new x-cable. The damage from a shorted cable can far exceed the cost of the cable itself.

I switched x and y and the errors followed. Got my new cable today. They sent the wrong encoder. Just got the cable hooked up and now I am only getting a 103 x following error too large. I hope I just smoked the encoder and not the board. Any other suggestions besides new encoder. Thanks for the help. I wish I would have done a little more research and checked the cable when I first started getting errors. But I've always had to learn the hard way.

Can a bad encoder cause servo over load?
