    VF2SS chip auger problems

I just powered up a brand new VF2 in my shop and so far it seems to be working great except for the chip auger , at first we were decking a pile of aluminum blocks with a shell mill and the chips were fuzzy and clingy so when the auger did not easily extract them I did not give it much thought . Today we started milling them and the machine was producing a big clean chip so when I hit cycle start I hit the auger button and let it run through the whole cycle the volume of chips produced is about 2 - 5 gallon buckets but the chip auger probably only removed abut a coffee can worth of chips . I walked over to my VF3 and looked at the screw in it and I noticed that the helix is quite different much tighter
Has anyone else here had problems with this , On a newer machine ?

I was under the impression that the newer machines were better at removing chips than the old ones...

I thought the sheet metal was much steeper forcing the chips down to the auger much better...but haven't really messed with anything newer than 2006 (which sucks bad imo). I did see they started putting in multiple augers parallel to the -Y- axis like the Japanese machines have always done...

We have a 2011 VF3 and have not had any problems with chip removal but still have to push them to the auger when they pile up. The helix of the auger is tighter on our older machine, about five inches on the old machine and about seven and a quarter on the 2011.

Our 2002 VF2SS is about the same. Once you get the chips to the auger, it pushes them right out the chute, no questions asked. Do you have the standard chip auger, or do you have the ugraded version with the extra augers parallel to the Y axis? The upgraded version is supposed to be better at this than the old standard version like we have.

face mill strings I have the same problem with. I just scoop them up later in the day, it wont block anything.
what happens is they get thrown into the door and kinda float on top of the auger, sometimes they catch and go through most times not. thats always been a probelm with augers on a machine not just haas.

We had the local HFO guy out and they measured the auger , evidently it might have been short but it was within spec , so far everyone is stumped . The other thing is once the chips start to pile up the auger overloads and chokes so it has to back up and clear the screw our vf3 will only do this when you are getting aggressive with the broom sweeping the chips down . The fix at this point is to install the old style auger, it has a tighter spiral so hopefully it will not overload the motor as easily and if it works as well as the vf3 we are good to go
I will report back once we give it a shot

    Problem solved

JWH was onto it , the older style auger has about a 5" spiral and she new style is about a 7" obviously it is intended to remove chips at a much faster rate , the problem is for us it just did not push the chips upmand out of the chute , Haas claims that they have never heard of anyone but us having problems but I suspect that it is dependant on the material and size of chip generated , to me I like the old style 5" auger because it pushes evevrything we throw at it out into the garbage can , we had them replace the 7 with a 5 and now the thing works just fine , The old adage of the tortise and the haire

Also a case of an engineer somewhere saying something is an improvement when obviously it is not.

I think it is more selective listening by Haas more than you are the only one with the problem.

Did they replace the auger at no charge?

    chip auger

Possibly the case , Hopefully it does not bite them to hard
Yes they handled it just the way one would expect , they found a new auger from a lathe that would fit my machine and sent it up and installed it , so far so good .

    Thanks
