    PROGRAMMING QUESTION

    Hello,

Does anybody know if there is a DVD or some other material to learn how to pragram the basics on the haas control.
I just got my minimill But having trouble to understan how to program it. I'm in the sheetmetal field as a programmer (day job ) so I got a cnc mill to run a side business . I have manual machines in my home shop. So I'm triying to learn how to program this mill . so I wanted to know if there is a dvd where they show you step by step .
or if there is any one on my area that wants to make some extra cash to teach me . PM I'm in the bay area Northern california.

    Thank you

Any G code M code tutorials will do. Thats what Haas bases their programs on with a few extra codes which you will learn along the way. You could order a manual from them that has bits of programs for their different canned cycles and learn from that but if you have no previous experience that might be tough.

download a book from the haas site called "programming handbook"
best book for almost any machine, then get it printed and bound at office max or something. it will be the best 15-20 bucks you spent

if I find the thread I will post it

wow your in for a real treat if that book doesnt help you. Personally I would hire someone to train you or goto a haas class, other wise you may destroy your machine.

    As far as that Book
One of my kids is learning how to run the haas off that book as well as my wife Its that easy. my kid is 11 next week. I wont/haven't turn her loose yet.

Being in California, you are in the land of Haas. First, when you purchased your machine from your dealer, standard practice is that dealers offer up to 1 day of training. Did you take advantage of this training? Second, your dealer can give additional advice, usually for no charge. It is all part of supporting their product. Third, your dealer can give additional training in their show room on the same model of machine or one similar, usually for no charge. Just ask them. Fourth, the Haas manuals are pretty well written and understandable by most any person with a year or two CNC experience. Much better than Fanuc. If you do not have 1 to 2 years experience with CNC machines, sign up for training at the nearest school that offers such training.

As a newbie myself, I completely understand your situation. I took a “factory outlet” course and it was free (besides the 4 hour round trip for 4 days) and I learned a lot. However the class time spent on the control was, without exaggeration 5 minutes.

It seems to me that Haas is more tuned to teaching G-code than the basic workings of the control. I’m making parts now, but my guess is I only know perhaps 40% of the controls functions and capabilities. If it were not for cnc zone I would really be in a tough spot.

As a 100% newbie to cnc what I needed from the Haas training was an in depth course on the control, set-up of the machine, general maintenance, part and tool off sets, and perhaps even some basic machining strategies for production runs.

Now I know many people will probably say it’s not really Haas’s responsibility to teach all that, but one could also argue the G-Code programming classes is not their responsibility either. It just seems to me that in today’s world people getting into cnc will be using a CAM program and not relying on hand coded programs. Just my opinion.

The reason they have to teach g code is do to everyone and there brother buys a machine and has absolutely no clue about what there doing.
I do agree that alot more time should be sent on the control and especially ANY time on the Probe and its possibilities. Not just haas but all the dealers.
there are so many things you can do in a control that most people dont even have a clue or use it to its fullest extent. I been doing both cnc mills and lathes for over 25 years and still learn new little tricks all the time. usually its from a repair guy or someone talking on this board.

Personally I dont feel that a machine dealer should train anyone for anything other than there control and function of that said machine. But that wont bring in sales, however it would help machines shops that are already in business keep busy as less people will have a clue on how to set-up and run a machine, so they wont buy machines. way too many hacks out there.

they are getting to be less hacks due to the banks arent loaning anyone money with a signature and a Idea. back in the mid 90's they were a guy with zero credit and zero experiance could get a loan for 500k with just a signature and a few PO's.
I've seen it happen many times. seens guys get a ton of machines upfront for material and then go blow it and never go to the shop or turn the machine on.

I did send my wife to the haas class so I took advantage of it, they showed her everything in the programming workbook. unfortuantely she had no clue how to set up a machine, tools etc etc ( which is just as well ), but she knows what codes do what.
