Hello CNC Zone. I have a 97 Haas V2 mill. The x axis is starting to make a lot of noise and runs rough with the hand handle. The motor seems to fell hot to the touch. I checked for chips on the wire cables and all seems to be ok. Could it be the motor of amp on the axis drive? |

| Feel the ballscrew for excessive heat and to see if you can feel way oil on it, it be a thin film, not dripping. If its hot and dry, Id check the metering valves to see if they are clogged and not getting way lube to the ball screw. Happened to a 98' vf2 of mine on the X axis screw. |

| I would recommend that you contact your local HFO. There are two likely causes: 1. Mechanical bind due to dry ballscrew or linear guide trucks possibly due to lack of oil such as oil leaks, restricted orifices, etc. A high load for the axis would be a sign of a bind. 2. Electrical issue due to bad motor or amp. Things you can try: 1. Check guide truck visually to see if dry. 2. Physically check the screw by disconnecting it from the nut housing to see if it feels rough to turn by hand.

| My VF3 -Y- axis started making a different kinda sound like something was going bad, also sounded “growny” with the handle. My HAAS tech listened to it and said without hesitation said my -Y- axis "thrust bearing" was shot. I guess that's my next big fix. ![]() Can't complain, 11 years and still going strong. |

Thank you for your reply. After checking all the cables under the way covers. Checking the ball screw for play. I switched the axis amp in the back cabinet. I am not using my A axis amp so in this case it worked out. The axis runs good and no more heat or noise. Now I can send out the damaged amp fro repair. i'm told it's half the price of a new one. Thank again for your help. I hope this helps others in with the same problem. |
