Hi,

I hope anybody here can help me out. I'm in the process of getting a mini mill so I can put it on my garage. I currently have a bridgport mill and a Lathe , I run a side business of CAD consulting . But I want to add the machining part so I can help my customers to make the prototypes in my garage as well. yesterday I went to the city to ask if I need to change my business drescription they said yes I need to find How loud this mini mill get it can not get over 60 db. does anyone know how load do they get? the sales guy I been dealling with sucks he does return my calls or emails so I can ask this question.

thank you for any help in advance.

Go to the HAAS website and contact them.
They might have the information you need.

The warning label on the front of our Mini Mill states "...Noise levels can exceed 70 dBA."

But that would really depend on what you are doing with the machine. If you are hogging away at a chunk of steel or stainless and using a 3/4" endmill, (not that you can really hog in a Mini with that big of a tool because you can't), yeah, it can get pretty noisy. But for things most people would do with a Mini Mill, I wouldn't think it would be that loud, (I am no expert on loudness!).

For purposes of what your city needs to know, that's a rough one. I would say from my perspective, aside from the occasional 3/4" Iscar insert drill, or 1" Mitsubishi insert end mill, the air hose is louder than the machine making chips. But again, that's all subjective.

I hope this helps somewhat. Good luck!

Mike

A mill even at 7500 rpm is not very loud usually, it is what you machine on it that will make the noise. If you already machine on a Bridgeport, I doubt you will make much more unless you have poorly held parts that vibrate a lot or really hog out material.

You are lucky to be able to have a home commercial shop. You can also add more insulation too. I insulated my metal garage door one time, makes a big difference.

Hi mike the problem is that the mill and my lathe i havent use is for comecial purpose, I got this machines on a really good deal it was one of those things that they paid me to take them.this machines are been sitting in my garage for like 10 years when I got them they were brand new . I'm a machinist by trade but never work as one (manual machinist) this is going to be my first cnc machine dont even know how to program it. I program Nc turrets laser, waterjets. so i'm taking the risk so I hope this machine can pass the loud test.

If you are a machinist and just need to learn how to program, no problem. If you don't know how to machine and then need to learn to program and machine, ya, that is a problem.

Prior to getting my VF-1 in 1992, I had lined up a programmer to do my programming for me. The machine was delivered, I went to a five hour class on programming, and before they could come and set the machine up---I set it up and I was running parts.

If you take a logical approach to programming and devote some time to learning, it is not that hard. The way I was taught to program is a very simple way to keep your g and m codes organized and easy to read. A cad-cam system does not do that, and they can be hard to read and understand while running. When I teach others, I teach then the way that I was taught and they are able to follow the program as it runs and find their errors before a crash happens.

Let us know what else you might need.

Mike

Also remember that,,,,,they are probably worried about the db outside of your garage, not what the sound is inside.

Try asking Little Machine Shop if they have noise rating after installing the Belt Conversion. It reduced the noise level significantly on my Mini-Mill.

Oh yeah they are concern about the noise coming out. I been doing some machining for the las couple of weekends and my mill does not make that much noise. the thing is that my boss ask me if why dont i make soem extra cash and do some machining (machining that we send out all the time ) well it turns out the right now last week he gave me a $15000 PO parts are due in multiple shipments the last order is due in Augost i know i can do them with my manual mill but I started to think of the idea of a mini mill. and i'm even thinking and go out and start looking for a small unit so i can dropp it off there. what do you recomend me? i know its kind of crazy move. but i'm open to risk.

I have a mini mill inside my garage. By far the loudest thing is the air compressor, which is in a side closet under the stairs. I run my machine with the garage door open all the time. If I close the garage door, I can barely hear the machine while standing on the sidewalk. Tell the city or whoever is interested that the noise is 20 or 30. If they want to come see, just run the spindle without cutting anything. After the city is happy, your job is to make sure you do not bother your neighbors, and the city will stay out of your hair. The Mini Mill spindle is much quieter than the VF2 at school.
