we are looking to purchase a a used lathe and I am trying to figure out whats the difference between the SL series of laths and the HL series

HL dont seem to be made anymore. Does anyone have an HL and what are your thoughts on it

HL is the earlier model. The HL1 and SL20 are more or less the same size. There are differences such as brush style servos on the HL machines versus brushless on the SLs. The turret has different style tool holders. Some HL older machines have pneumatic chuck openers.

The HLs can be quite reliable workhorses. I have a 1995 HL1 and a 1997 HL1 Big Bore. The older machine needed the Z servo replaced about a year ago but that is the only serious repair it has needed. I can't recall the Big Bore needing anything major yet.
