Newbie question about verifying my machine options.

I purchased a 08 VF2 with a SMTC, I’m wondering if there some place in the control to verify whether or not I have the high speed tool change option?

I’m asking because I have a few tools that weigh more than 4 pounds which require an “H” designation in the tool chart with the option. I did input the H with the heaver tools, but it does not appear to affect the tool change speed. I’m fairly sure I don’t have HSTC but I would like to know where to verify it.

Look in the Parameters, I can't suggest what page so you will just have to scroll through. When an option is OFF there will be a 0 beside while a 1 means it is ON.

Actually I was not even aware you could get a high speed, I guess you mean a higher speed than normal, option for the SMTC. I have a VF2 with the SMTC and the tool change is almost to fast to see, I can't imagine it going any faster.

I think only the SS' have the Higher speed tool changers...at least that generation. We had the regular VF-2YT and it was just a regular speed changer.

My new VF-3SS is twice as fast changing tools.

Given that the "heavy" designation didn't change it tells me that you have a normal speed changer, not a high speed.

(and you'd know if it affected it!)

This is NOT a high speed tool change

Perhaps I took it wrong; (as usual) I guess a SMTC is considered to be high speed. (?) Quoting out of the machine manual “On non-high speed tool changers, “H” and “h” have no effect.” I guess they could be saying that the carrousel tool changers will not be affected by the H (h) designations.

I guess I was confused because the tools that I in put with the “H” change at the same speed as the others. (??) It says “as a precaution, the tool changer runs at a maximum of 25% of normal speed if changing a heavy tool.” At 25%, that would be very noticeable and I see no difference at all, any idea what may be the problem?

Did you check setting #10? I turn this setting on so my machine rapids @50% and slows the tool change as well. If you ask why I run it @50%, It's a Haas, I don't want the machine to shake itself apart.

I think you are needlessly wasting time. I have numerous Haas machines and none of them have shaken themselves apart. One Super MiniMill has been running for years with two 6" Kurt vises and a HRT 210 rotary on the table nearly all the time and it hasn't shaken itself apart. Although it does shake when doing engraving with lots of sat little moves.

Also, if you don't bypass the door safty, having the door open will also slow your tool change down.

Are you running a DT? @ 50% I'm still faster than your SS.

    My point exactly... 50%

If I had deep pockets, my whole shop would be Mazak from one end to the other. Even their lathes are badass! Fastest lathe I have ever had the pleasure of running. Fastest to program, fastest to setup and totally safe. 2400 ipm will make you pucker everytime you hit that green button!
