1990 VF-1 102 Alarm

Hi All
I just took delivery of a 1990 VF-1 and at power up I have a 102 alarm with a 161 alarm. Can it be fixed or should I get my money back

Geof will become famous soon enough

102 is Servos Off, you always get this on start up and you hit Reset and then Power Up/Restart to home the axes.

161 is X-Axis Drive Fault which can be cause by a short in the motor, or a short of one motor wire to ground, or running into a mechanical stop.

Did the X axis move at all?

If the answer is Yes then possibly it ran into a hard stop when it tried to home which suggests that the limit switch is stuck.

If the answer is No then it could be shorted wiring but that machine has brush type motors so it could be a short caused by a build up of carbon dust.

Either way you are going to have to start taking off covers to expose the limit switch and motor. Both the switch and dust build up causing a short are fairly simply to fix. A wiring short may also be easy, a true short in the motor means a new motor which starts running into more money.

Neds a new brush motor?

Be careful. Those motors were prone to brushes wearing out and to coolant getting in But rarely did that kill the motor. If you can dry it out, clean it out, and get new brushes, you can test if it turns by just applying a 12 volt battery (car) to it. What is more likely is the encoder. Buying a motor may not get you the encoder. If all else fails, Haas has both.

Smile Machine is UP and RUNNING

Thanks for the help
The X axis motor needed to be rebuilt. The zero return cable was replaced it worn thru in a few places and a parameter was change back to original; the last owner had change a Z axis parameter for some reason. Now everything functions.

Haas RS232

Hi All
Is there any where I can buy a cable to connect to my laptop to my vf-1?
Then there is the software, I tried to down load from OneCNC and was unable to complete the registration process. What do you suggest for a commutation program?
