Unhappy Cannot insert programs

Just bought a minimill and cannot get a program into it! Am using the top port but keep getting error message saying there is no info between the %s.

I can write direct ok and run from that, which is all fine!

Baud and bit rate are set to 4800 and 8 both sides so there shouldn't be an issue there.

Any Ideas anyone?

RS232

Hi Bermi1,

First, welcome to the CNC Zone.

You may have already done these things but thought I would at least give you some suggestions. I am sure you will get some responses that may be able to deal directly with your "specific" error message.

If you do a search on the HAAS Mills Sub Forum and type in rs232 you will get a good list of previous threads that will discuss DNCing.

You can also visit the HAAS Automation website and look in the training or ask the HAAS man section to get information on the subject. I believe they even have a schematic on the cable to show the pin outs. If not, I know I have seen it or a link to it on this forum.

Depending on the version software you have there may be settings or parameters you need to adjust in your HAAS control.

John

Try sending (punching) out a program from the Haas to the PC.

Cannot insert programs

Hi Dcoupar,

I have tried that with no sucess either: I am using HP Ipaq PDAs which are functioning ok and will send and recieve from my other CNCs (Four FANUC 1 Mitsubishi) I thought it might be pin 3 and not 2 but I guess it can't be as the Haas knows the % symbols are there. Also, John, I went over to forums and can't find this precise problem, but I am still looking. I thought maybe I could try downloading from my laptop?

Geof will become famous soon enough

It is possible your machine manual (if you have one) does not include the detailed information about setting up for the RS232 data transfer. The two pages in the pictures below may be helpful.

Hi Geof,

I have the manual, but haven't seen the pin outs. Your page diagram prompted me to have a look see in my 9/26 D socket assembly.

The ones I have are;

CNC side (25-pin male) ----- PC side (9-pin female)
pin 1 ---- cable shield
pin 2 -------------------------- pin 3
pin 3 -------------------------- pin 2
pin 4 -------------------------- pin 7
pin 5 -------------------------- pin 8
pin 7 -------------------------- pin 5
pins 6 & 8 jumped
pins 8 & 20 jumped
pins 6 & 4 jumped (on theD9)

This is clearly not the same and would explain my woes!
I guess it looks like a trip to RS or Tandy after the festivities!

I'll let you know how I get on...

Hi

I have now followed the manufacturers diagram that Geof sent, plus I have found two other pinout diagrams from Dan Fritz, all the way back to 2005. The result is the same - zilch! The hardware I am using is a HP IPAQ, maybe thats the culprit?

Do you have a floppy drive or USB port on that machine? If the answer is yes can you load from these?

Also can you post your program? It is possible the error is in the program.

Hi Geof

There is no floppy or USB option on the machine, just the 2 com 1 & com 2 25 pin serial ports. I know com 1 port was used previously as they used a cable to office connection and this was physically chopped, leaving the plug in-situ.

Here is the program I am trying to inject:

How old is your machine?

The first line below the % should be either four or five numbers preceded by captial O'

Or.

Built 2001

We have been naming this file as O00002 (On the CNC screen which seems to be saying give me a number - I will arrange it in order), all subsequent ones will just go in in O/numeric order. These will be cross referred to the original program numbers so we don't lose track. As we understood, you only need to input this number on the CNC side?

Hi Geof

That has sorted it, giving it the same part program number at each end and it was accepted. Funny thing I don't quite get, is that I used the original RS232 plug in that we use for the rest of the machines by mistake.

The one I made up this morning is sat on my desk...

That means we should be making chips tomorrow!

Thanks for your help Geof, appreciate it very much.

Probably catch you when I fall off the curve again!
