Haas vf-2yt noisy with radial play at tool

Hello all

I am hoping some of you experienced Haas mill guys can give me an opinion.
We recently purchased a 2007 Haas VF-2 YT 30 HP with 2 speed gearbox.
We purchased it because it had very low hours and it checked out as being in
excellent condition by an experienced Haas tech.

Let me first say we have never owned a haas VMC. We do own a Haas GR 512
and its been a good machine.

The Vf-2 seems very noisy almost clunky when it runs. In addition there is quite a bit of radial play at the bottom of the spindle when you feel the engagement blocks that fit into tool holder.

It sits next to a Fadal 4020 and a Hurco both of which have more hours and are more quiet smoother sounding machines.

is this typical of a "gear box" machine? Is what I describe typical? or do we have a machine with issues? We did tighten the belts as they were loose
but it didn't seem to make a real difference.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

The Haas has a closed loop system that is accelerating and decelerating at all times to keep that perfect rpm. If the noise is too loud you can check the spindle encoder belt. If that is loose then it can be nosier. Have you cut with it? The Haas gearbox has some backlash in it and that noise goes away when you are in a cut.
