looking at buying HASS TM1P

Hi All,

We are a small job shop looking at buying a TM1P. anyone got thoughts on the brand HASS and has anyone got this/used this particular model and what do you think of it?
can you take heavy cuts? are the ways stable/ridgid enough. When I looked into the machine I thought they looked thin and flimsy.

An owner of another job shop I spoke with said he was hoping to get 3 yrs out of the machine but has lasted 2x that. Do these machines not have that much life in them????

seems like a nice machine with alot of travel for the $$.

thanks for your input.

What do you call a heavy cut and what will you use the machine for?

The TM1P is an 'entry level' machine aimed at people who are transitioning from manual to CNC. It is an excellent, prototype/very-short-run-production machine but it is not a high volume heavy hogger. The spindle is belt drive with a modest hp motor and it does not have a back gear so large diameters in steel have to be whittled away with small cuts. On small diameters in aluminum alloys or brass it can machine just as fast as its larger brothers. It can easily maintain better than +/-0.0005" and with a bit of babying can hold 0.0002".

ive had mine 4 1/2 years now and it still holds tenths,it all depends on how you take care of it and if you abuse it,that machine is light duty and should be used a such
its well built and for the money you cant beat it,if your looking to cut big hunks of steel
fast forget it,you will have to double your budget and bite the bullet theres no machine for 32-40 k that can give you that unless you buy used, maybe look for a used mazak
good luck

we are a job shop so whatever comes thru the door. could be alum, stainless, plastic, steel.

right now i have 2 matsurra's that are hogging alum at 5k rpm, feed of 60-80 and a depth of cut of about 1/4". would the TM1P handle that?

any thoughts on the VF2? its about the same footprint and just a bit more $$.

You should really read the machine specifications before coming here to ask questions. The TM1P has a maximum spindle speed of 2000 rpm, obviously it is not going to do anything at 5000 rpm.

GEOF, I think you need to take a look at the specifications on the HASS website. I don't know where you got your information from on it having a 2000 rpm spindle but the TM1P has a 7.5 HP vector drive 6000RPM spindle.

Yeah, you're right. I am guilty of day dreaming too early in the morning.

What is the diameter and type of tool used? As far as $ goes, the VF-2 is a great deal and you get a different class of machine.

I've had a TM-1P for a little over three years. It will cut aluminum at 60 IPM .25 deep but that will put the load meter right on 100% Mine has treated me well, but I only run it about 15 hours per week. If you think you will be doing a lot of steel I doubt if it's your best choice. The tool changer holds 10 tools and that is marginal as well. If you can afford a VF I would definitely go that way.
