Retrofitting thru spindle coolant

Is it possible or practical to retrofit thru spindle coolant to a machine that was not ordered with it? Is it as simple as adding the pump and hoses and paying Haas to activate it in the control? Or is the spindle itself unique to TSC machines.

This would be on a 2008 VF-4 w/ gearbox.

Im not familair with HASS however the last few machines we bought, if we want to have it added they have to come out, swap bearings for sealed ones and replace a few other parts in the head aside from adding the pump.

It's possible but not simple. You must change/add some parts. The spindle is the same as the spindle with TSC, but you must change the Draw Bar. For activate the TSC in the control you don't need a code. only set some parameters.
I think it is not possible by your self without experience. Call you HFO, there has a retrofit Kit but it's more expansive as if you ordered with the machine, because it's a lot of work and the Tec need some hours.

you say its a 2008 it is possable your first thought is right. just add a hose and pump and turn on an option. most machine builders just build this featur in "All" thier machines it is so much easier when the customer changes his mind 8 months after he buys it .

your best thing is call your haas service center or parts department. stay away from a salesman.

DON'T do so!

It's right thats maybe the drawbar is for TSC, but you need some other parts there are NOT installed. The Tool Release Piston must be configurat for the TSC option and you need a airsolenoid to bring the Tool release Bolt to the Drawbar. Without them, your coolant is only comming in the spindle head and on the Drive belt.

It's a god Idea to call your HFO to ask which parts are in your machine and wich not. You don't need a Salesman, you only need the serial no.

Its not just getting the parts that would be your problem, it is also setting it to run properly.
There is the pump, the pipes, a bunch of fittings with a pressure switch and check valves, purge solonoid, flexible pipe to tool release piston, new drawbar, a coolant seal housing, push on fittings, some nylon pipe, some wiring from the spindle head to the control, some wiring from the control to the thru spindle coolant pump, some filters and general pipework, depending on machine type you may need a rotary coupling................
and thats just off the top of my head - you would need more on top of this!!!
If anything goes wrong while you attempt to fit it, you risk damage to the spindle/drawbar. the amount of down time you would have while you try to perfect it would just make it not worth doing.
So in answer to your question - It is not just a case of a pipe and a pump. It is possible - but only for someone with lots of Haas experience.

Hope this helps

Thank you everyone for the replies. Hindsight being the wonderful thing that it is, my boss and I now both wish the machine was ordered with TSC to begin with.

you know you can add a through tool coolant adapter block to the spindle nose and buy special tool holders. check out Lyndex-Nikken site for oil hole adapter.
