Hi guys... I have a VF2 here with the 10k / 20hp spindle, but no gearbox. The part has got a 7/8" -14 thread. It doesn't need to be like 90% thread engagement or anything, but I'm wondering if anybody has tried to rigid tap stuff this large without a gearbox. If I need to get a thread mill I'd rather just do that right off the batt... Thanks for any advise! Pete |

| We do 3/4-10 with no gear box in aluminum on ec 500,in anything else can't help other then to say I tried 3/4 pipe tap not thinking and allmost got it to depth by pecking in mild steel.I asked that question (why peck tap),and couldn't realy understand why untill we got the ec 500,have allways had machines with gear boxes and the torque to drive taps.

| Thread milling would be the best but, as suggested, you can probably do it by peck tapping (Repeat Rigid tapping to use the Haas name). Run at 1200 which is about maximum torque and peck one thread depth. Hold you hand over E-stop and watch the spindle load, if it hits 200% and stays there hit E-stop; then figure out how to get everything apart.
