Have basic ?s about Set-up, and Display Positions For Hass SL Lathe.

I've started a new, part time job. I was setting up the machine last night and noticed a couple of things. First off, I had to use a 1" block to help touch off "Z" on the face of the chuck, and I have no way of touching off on the OD of the chuck to pick up "X". Without making a skim cut on the part.
I was wondering what other methods are there for picking up "X", if any?

Now for the important question, what do need to do to show the actual location of my tool, when I call up the tool using G54 T0202, or when I'm running the program? I want to see what Dia the tool is at and what the Z distance is for my "Z" zero location.

Also, is there any helpfuls anyone can share with me?

    Thanks.

Unless you have a toolsetter the only way I know to do the X offset is like the manual description; take a skim of the OD, press X offset key, measure the diameter of the skin and enter it. I also do the same for Z; skim the end and set Z to that then touch all the other tools off on this face.

For displaying where the machine is at go the the Current Commands page and then push cursor up (^) until you see the Position Work display in the upper right corner of the screen.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

Yes, if money is not a subject, then get a 3D touch probe(pix below), pick up X Z Y blah blah.

The best way to learn is trial error.

I will sometimes use a piece of paper between the tool tip and the chuck or a piece of tooling of a known diameter. Carefully move the tool up to the chuck until you can't slide the paper between them anymore and then set the tool as if you have taken a skim cut. Its not perfect but you can get pretty close.
