    Happy with my new TL1

Haas delivered and installed on Tuesday. Got training yesterday and today and have the first parts completed today.
Accuracy .01mm (vernier measurement) so I am very happy.

This part I am making involves parting EN19 steel studs diameter 32mm. Have some vibration at start of parting. Any suggestions on speeds and feeds and position of parting tool tip (below centre or on centre) to eliminate this vibration.?

Fairly slow speed and feed, maybe as low as 300 rpm and .05mm per rev, parting tool maybe 0.1mm below center with the parting location as close to the chuck as possible. Also with these high carbon alloy steels I have found using tapping fluid when parting can help with smooth chip formation.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

Make sure your parting blade is parallel with the x-axis with an indicator. I have 2 TL-1's at work and people have a habit of moving the dorian tool post around.

Smile Thanks a lot for info

Applied your tips and sure much better. Also dicovered the SFM function and implemented that instead of limiting speed by MAX RPM. Makes for brilliant cutting as the speed varies with diameter. Just implements the recommended insert cutting speeds and there you go!

Anyway I am relatively new to this. Has turned on manual lathe for the race car and learned a few things by trial and error. My VF3 is operated by competent machinist and when I peek over his shoulder it all happens too fast for me. He uses Mastercam to transfer Solidworks models I design to the mill.

But here now this little lathe I am going to learn to operate. Just got to keep him busy on the mill so he does not interfere on the lathe with his superior knowledge I look like an idiot again.

Uptdate not so happy and happy again

Well the vibration on parting went away when Haas rep came over and did something on the spindle. Installed a shim he said. The machine then parted through 32mm EN19 so silently I could not believe it is actually parting until I found the part on the crosstravel.

Then the trouble started. Something went wrong on the x and z travels. Machine would indicate traveling but no travel whatsoever. Also I could move the x and y handwheels, get movement and the display would not update.
Total consternation. Especially since this now happened intermittently. A nightmare.

But the Haas guys came out. Replicated my keystrokes. Did not give up until they could see the fault for themselves. Then stuck to it. I had to leave yesterday on short bussiness trip and came back today. They stuck the problem and I left them work to set up and run if they think they got it sorted.

Yesterday evening they called. They replaced the "processor board". Reloaded the software. Could not replicate the fault again. Set up the work and made one complete cycle.

I got home this afternoon. Went to shop . Ran their setup on 11 parts all worked fine tolerances perfect I am happy again
