What is the difference in a R8, C5, parrallel shank tool, and tool holders. with respect to the 32mm holders and reduction sleeves you get with the SL10. The names dont mean much if you havent seen them. Dont want to harrass the tooling sales guys too much :-) Hope someone can shed some light as im looking to use some 5 and 6 mm drills and looking for the more universal attachment that can be used for other jobs i dont know of yet... (the overall plan is to get a basic tool package, but i need to understand the different fitment types first, lol) Thanks for your time in reading this so far |

| You should try Googling to find some pictures. R8 is a collet holder with a tapered head and parallel shank used on small milling machines for milling cutters. It is drawn into a tapered hole by a 7/16"NF drawbar that threads into the end. The grip range is from very small (1/16" or so) up to 3/4" and as far as I know it is only available in round hole. C5 is also a collet holder normally used for bar work on lathes; it has a tapered head and parallel shank. This one uses a drawtube to pull it into a tapered hole in the spindle. The grip range is again from very small up to 1-1/16" and because a drawtube is used any length can be put into the collet when the diameter is 1" or less. As far as I know neither of these holders are used as standard equipment for tool holding on lathes but they can be. I have made my own adapters to use them on HL1, SL10 and GT20 machines. A parallel shank tool is what the name implies a straight bar that fits in a staright hole and is secured by setscrews; normally used for boring bars. Toolholders hold regular square shank turning tools. You really do need to harass the tool sales guys and your Haas dealer if you want more info.
