expanding power chuck

Can you use a power chuck to hold a part by the ID like you can with a manual chuck? It looks like this would get complicated because even if the chuck/draw bar could exert adequate pressure in what would be the unclamped position the Haas will not operate from a program with "unclamped" on the control screen. I realize this can be done with an expanding 5C collet but I was looking at clamping a 3" ID and that might be a little big for the 5C expander.

Geof will become famous soon enough

You can change the chuck clamping direction in the Parameters or Settings, I forget which, then 'unclamped' means it is closed not open. At least I think I found a Parameter/Setting on my SL10 for this.

Great news, I'll look into that tomorrow. You kept a log of your purchases 28 years ago and knew where it was! Lord, I have trouble finding my AARP card. Your recollections did stir up a lot of old memories, bought my first mill in 1966,67,68? for $600. A used American Vertical that apparently was manufactured in Italy. It was a pure Bridgeport clone, even the parts were interchangeable with the exception of the cast iron casting. The damn thing weighed almost 4,000 pounds. I remember moving it with the Chevy dealership wrecker. Made quite a picture suspended from the boom slowly twirling in the wind at 30 mph. In those days you could get away with that kind of crazy stuff, OSHA was only a gleam in Jimmy Hoffa's eyes.

I am the pack rat to outclass all pack rats. I still have tools I brought to Canada with me from New Zealand and some neat stuff I picked up in Aberdeen, Scotland when I lived there for a year in 1970. But I have to admit I often cannot find things; at least not when I need them, normally I find them a day after I have bought another one.
