Touching tools off of workpiece on SL-20

This is on an SL-20 Lathe

How do you touch a tool off of the work piece in z axis such as a drill or a tap. I tried to touch the tool to the workpiece in the tool offset page push z face measure but my offset changs from -8.6584 to -13.1182.

Is there another procedure to touch off tools in z axia besides the tool pre-setter

Thanks in advance

Geof will become famous soon enough

Do you have any values in G54?

What you describe is the way Haas says to do it; if the face of the work is going to be Z zero just touch the tool to the face and push Z face measure. With drills for X you just push F2 and it brings up the X zero position for the centerline of the machine.

Check that there is nothing in G54 and it should work.

Do I need to touch all tools off or can I just touch off the longer tools that will not meet the pre-setters restriction in size

Yes there is a offset value in g54 should i set that to 0.00. also once all tools are set can i still use g54 or do I need to use another offset such as g55 or g56

Go into your Settings and find Setting 64 T. OFS Meas Uses Work.

I think you will find it is OFF.

Turn it on and now when you use Z Face Measure the value in the G54 offset will be subtracted from the work offset value that goes into the work offset table.

Then you can use G54 as you have been doing.

I think this is correct, turn your rapids down and single block to make sure things are the way you want.

Works well if you are going to touch all tools off of the work piece, your work offset (ex G154 P1) and G54 needs to be 0.000, If you are going to touch only 1 or 2 tools off of the work piece due to lenght your G54 value needs to be the same as the work offset you are using ie: G154 P1

Thanks for the Great Advice
