Need 1/2" of X Travel on SL-30

I've called Haas and no one will call me back.

I just need and extra 1/2" of x travel to clear a large dia. part.I know removing the limit switch is a not recommended.Anyone have any sucess getting more X travel without harming the machine.

Thanks,
Jeff

Geof will become famous soon enough

I think you would be taking a risk, 1/2" is a lot and you mind finish up bending way covers and things like that even if the linear guids and ballscrew had extra travel.

If the part is short enough you could try mounting a boring bar on the outside of the turret and go to town.

Thumbs up More X

I had to get some more X out of my sl-20 a while back. Max 10.00 x and i needed 10.75. After a day of thinking...I went outside the box and did this..

I installed a boring bar backwards (upside down) in one of my slots.
I programed the toolpath running the lathe in reverse....(rotation that is)

This gave me about 2 inches in x ...more than enuff...

My 2 cents anyway...

Grats on getting your solution to work.

J Copeland,

Would you mind dropping a line or two and tell all what you ended up doing?
Curious, I bet others are too.

Sure, but let it be know that:I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE THAT DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING !!!

I removed the x axis limit switch and slotted the botom hole down .250

In .001,I moved the x axis up(be careful not to run the slide above the slides.

I then re-installed the limit switch, slide the limit switch until it lights up(then causing the machine to call that home)

The way you can check this is to put the machine in 5 percent rapid and see if it works.I was told my Haas sevice that the worst that could happen was it'll overtravel causing the servo's to shut off.

I gained .4714 x axis travel,thus solving my problem.
