Help with TL-3W

New to the board and I was hoping you guys could help me out with some problems I'm having with a Haas TL-3W.
Background Info: I started with a new compay about 4-5 months ago to run the CNCs they just purchased. So I'm the first person to play with the machines. Most of my time is spent on the TL-3W. Its never been crashed, so problems shouldn't arise from that angle. Its got a manual toolpost. We've added air & oiler to the tailstock so I can actually move the thing by myself. Use the machine for different things but quite a lot of shafts (anywhere from 0.650-5.0")in mostly 1045 or 4140 and resleeving EndBells.
Question 1: The tailstock is ridiculous inconsistant. Everytime I move the beast and lock it down its in a different position. Even on the same job where I was putting the tailstock in the same spot on the ways, the thing would be out anywhere from 0.007-0.030! Is this just what Haas considers acceptable or do we have a bad tailstock? The design of this tailstock and clamping mech. is terrible but really? Has anybody designed anything to fix this problem or know of a solution?
Question 2: This machine seems to be a chatter-box. Roughing is a problem, I can't take a 0.150 DOC. Some days I'd be lucky to take 0.075 DOC. Figured out some ways to combat chatter: move the toolpost to the 'back' position so I don't have to have the tailstock hang out so much, tightening the tailstock with a 3' pipewrench, driving the center into the part as hard as I can, tightening the steady like a bastard too, been playing with a lot of different insert geometries, 1-rad inserts help but they die pretty quick in 4140. But the machine still like the chatter!
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The tailstocks on the TL-1 to 3 is basically worthless. The TL-4 has probably the best design. They will not repeat to save your life so don't ever think it will. As far as chatter, get used to that too. I don't think the bearings are a big as they should be.

Yeah, I have to agree: if the TL-3 tailstock is anything like the TL-1, it's one of the few, serious shortcomings in the machine. I hate mine.

Strange to hear, I adjusted the one I have on the TL-2 and I can run 12" shafts within a few .0001's the entire length. They are adjustable just like a manual tailstock on a manual machine. Take some time to true it up and see what you get.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Well its dissapointing that Haas would think that the tailstock is up to par...
And rbest27, I've been dialing in the tailstock when I need to. I'm actually getting pretty quick at it by now. Its the fact that I'll dial it in-> run a job all day-> push the tailstock back home at the end of the day-> next day push the tailstock back to same position-> and have to dial in the donkey thing again.
