Vibrations when turning?

I had some Sandvik tooling people in my shop recently. We were cutting some HastX on an SL30. We had some unexpected vibrations when turning both ID and OD. We used a dial indicator to check movement of the turret and got .0015” buy pushing on the turret. Anybody know if this is excessive?

Does it move back to where you started? Hard Hard are you pushing on the turret? Which direction X, Z? And yes if it moves and doesnt return to your original reading (with power on the servo's) i would say that is too much. .0001-.0002 max deflection i would say and it should return to the first reading.

How old is the machine? Been crashed? What kind of ops are you doing? Sl-30 turrets are not known for strength in my opinion. You may need to have the turret rebuilt.

The SL-30 has not been crashed that I’m aware of. It’s a June 2004 machine with low time (lots of prototyping and idle time).

We do OD and ID profiling, grooving etc.

I talked to our local HFO Applications guy and he told me it was “normal” as long as it “springs” back to original position. I’m really struggling with this machine on Inconel 625!!

What type of tooling are you using? Inserts? Is the turret a VDI or bolt on?

HOLY CRAP!!!!
a thou and a half at the turret from shoving on it????
In my opinion that is completely unacceptable.

Turret is a bolt on. They pushed pretty hard, but yes .0015” movement

I have tried various tools/grades (CNMG, VNMG) from Iscar, Greenleaf, Sumito, Kennametal, and now Sandvik. Some of the problems are notch wear which leads to tool breakage and the biggest not being able to “break a chip” especially during finishing passes (.010"DOC ).

Then there is are .060” to .070” wide face groove’s that I’ve been using Thin Bits on (they kind of suck!) Anybody know were to get something better?

Cool too much slop!

Inconel is extremely tough to machine because of its high nickel content. The only way we could machine it was using special oil coolant.(similar to engine oil)Mabye try 9005 or 9015 series insert(very hard)or try an insert for stainless. We had the best luck with brazed carbide inserts. And make sure you charge a small fortune for any jobs that are monel ,inconel etc.they are usually a real pain and cost you in tooling!

Now the HFO has decided they should take a lot at the turret after all. A tech is coming today.

Did you get the issue worked out?

Our SL30 also had considerable slop in the Z axis. In our case it turned out the entire saddle was moving, not just the turret. I removed the back panel placed an indicator on the end of the ballscrew and pushed on the turret again. The whole ballscew assembly was loose and had to be adjusted using the nuts next to the ballscrew support bearing mount. Just an idea if you are still having problems.

I have an SL 30 and we have found that the clamping mechanism and the thrust bearings are one of the weekest points in that turret design. We on average have that turret of once a year. There is also a row of bolts in the turret with springs behind them I have had these springs break and cause the turret to move. How ever if the turret does spring back to the original position you should be mechanicly sound. I have found that haas does not offer the best support for these machines. I also have had a lot of repeatability issues with poor assembly processes such the other guy who mentioned is screw was moving. However if you feel there turret is bad wait until you get into the vectra drive and the spindle motor.

The HFO tech at first thought the X axis was “not repeating” he then adjusted the backlash and he seemed to think it was operating normal for a HAAS. I have not run that same job again but I will be in the next day or two. We are looking into running the tools in the other direction to make the cutting forces push down against the turret rather than picking it up.
