Hello all: Happy 4th of July. Considering purchasing a used lathe (sl20). Seems like it has alot of hours on it. I was wondering what is the average or acceptable spindle and travel hours per year. I was comparing the hours to my mill and the difference is signifigant. But I think that lathes tend to run continously and even lights out and maybe be a factor in hour accumulation. It seems like machines like to run and most of my trouble occurs after they sit for a while. Just trying to get some input on lathe hours. This one is about 2 years old and has 3k+ spindle hours. Did they run the heck out of it or is that average use. Thanks for your replies. Have a great weekend. |

Where are you getting spindle hours from? My machines display: Power On time, Cycle Start time and Feed Cutting time; which are you saying is Spindle time?

| Hmm.....I didnt match the readouts on my mill (same as above). I thought maybe the lathe time was measured differently. For agrument sake, Feed Cutting time would be equal to Spindle time. cnc_joseph I hear ya. Thanks for the replies |

| If you are using feed cutting time I think 3+k hours in two years is high. The machine must have run three shifts. I have a HL1 bought in 2000 that has 3600 or so hours, running one shift. Still runs fine though.
