??'s on SL10 tooling

Ok guys, this fall we will be getting an sl10 lathe. I have run manual lathes before and understand the basic tools, but how do you hold drill bits in the
sl10? In the video from Haas they are using what appears to be a er16 collet chuck bolted to the turret? Are these tool holders commonly available and if so where? Or do I need to order this stuff from Haas. I'm sure I will have more questions as I get closer to pulling the trigger. Thanks in advance to all that reply.

The ER collet will probably be held in a boring bar holder. You can find these ER collets with 3/4" and 1" shanks many places. One supplier is KBC Tools, just Google that name and you should find the KBC website.

Geof, thank you so much for your reply, in looking at the options for this machine I noticed that there doesn't seem to be a steady rest or tailstock option. Some of the parts we will be doing will be 6-7" long and thin so I'm gonna need some way to support it. Any ideas? Again thank you so much for your time in answering my questions.

Tailstock is, or was, available on SL10, I have one.

Steady rest, I do not know.

Be aware that the tailstock on an SL10 dles in fact leave a bit to be desired....
It's not the most repeatable thing I have ever seen.

Thanks for the heads up, I have heard from others that the tailstock is an issue. I just talked to the owner and he says we can make these parts out of smaller pieces and just solder them together, thus we won't need the tailstock. Again thanks to everyone here for their help.

In the 1.0" and 1.5" round toolholders that bolt on to the outside of the turret, for serious hole I use different size Allied indexable drills with the Gen 2 system of inserts. For small holes and centering, I have a Jacobs chuck with a 1.0" straight shank in the tool holder. This works well, since once you've set the offset to center, it's always there no matter what size bit you have in it.

I do parts that long in my SL10. You can buy a bar puller, and split your program. So... you cut 2 or 3 inches... then pull... then cut the back 3 inches. I do it all the time. And if the stock is bigger than the spindle bore... then it won't be an issue.

Also, for your drill bits… if you keep your eye’s open in ebay… you can get good deals on Collet extension holders. I bought 2 new 1” x 6” Lendex er16 holders for $45 shipped!!

Good luck

Wow, never thought of that one, thank you for the info. Thanks to all that replied and big thank you to the people that run this forum, it truly is a wealth of information. I'm sure I will be back with more ?'s once the machine is actually here this fall. I can't wait to put this puppy through it paces.
