New Haas sl20 control

I have been working with Fanuc based machines for the past 5 yrs where you just press the shift button to set your z..and on x take a skim cut measure and enter it in the geometry offset page

Question is how different is it on a Haas that has a Z set measure button and a X set measure button.....

I think the Z set button will set Z 0 but what about the X set button.....

This is probably a really dumb question I appoligize in advance

I'm guessing that you haven't tried to press the X Dia Measure button yet or you wouldn't have asked.

If you're in the offsets page, with the tool loaded that you want, press the X Dia Measure button. It will prompt you to enter the diameter. So, yes, you do take a skim pass, measure it, press the button and enter that into the control.

According to the Haas website, the tool presetter is optional. It sure makes the job easier though.

I agree the presetter is nice.. I have an SL30 equipped with one.. Has anone noticed that using the presetter gets you in the range +/- .003", but you still have to tweak the results for each tool to get it dialed in perfectly - or does everyone else's toolsetter measure the tool offsets perfectly from the touch off?

cheers,
Paul

Paul,

Our SL30 came with the tool probe. We do aviation repair work, so taking a skim cut is not always feasible. We have found that the directions(in the lathe manual) to calibrate the tool probe are wrong. You will need to cut an OD then measure it, to set the probe OD setting and cut an ID, then measure it to set the ID setting of the probe ( I don‘t know the setting numbers off the top of my) . The difference in these 2 setting is the effective width of the probe. The effective width is used to set the neg Z setting. The Z0 setting is always 0. Don’t just measure the probe with a micrometer and set your probe settings with that number, or you will be ± .003 , don’t ask me how I know

Our lathe manual is 4 or 5 years old so things may have changed.

We have also started to adjust our thermal settings. This is to prevent any thermal growth from throwing the probe/lathe off. I don’t have any hard proof this has helped.

And to add to that statement: it's because the micrometer only accounts for the dimension of the head. There is also a small amount of movement before the probe trips its switches. That's probably the error that others have seen.

I've never used lathe probing but the TS27 on the mills uses a rod of known diameter (gauge pin or the backside shank of an endmill) to calibrate its trip points. I'm surprised the lathe doesn't do something similar.

+/-.003 is a lot. I guess something must be wrong with your presetter, I used to work for a company has all Haas and the presetter getting with .0003 .

My suspect, if in the case of you get like .003 difference between ID and OD tool...... then tool presetter need calibrate.

Are you saying your SL-10's tool probe is off by more than .003" every month?

Toolsetter is nice. but mine is rarely within .010 , and as much as .050 out at times.
I set it about .050 out on new tools and tweak with tool wear page. Helps me kill less parts.
