sl-30 crash

recently had a bad crash, now in lower rpms spindle whines around 50 - 650 rpm. also spindle is out about .002. Turret is out as well. can anyone tell me how to realign the spindle and turret. i don't have a maintenance manual that shows me any kind of drawings for the spindle or turret. thanks

Realigning and solving your other problem is not something you want to do yourself. Call HAAS for service.

Geof will become famous soon enough

I agree with gar's suggestion, get a Haas serviceman in.

If you have moved the spindle, in other words, moved the headstock you had some very significant forces acting. That, coupled with the whine you mention, suggests the possibility that you have brinelled the spindle bearings.

I hope I am being too pessimistic, but I think you need a vibration analysis on the spindle as well as alignment.

Wink

These SL30 machines are so pretty to look at, too bad there not heavy duty machines. thats why they cost so little.

I know of a company that crashed their brand new SL30, after that they could never maintain tolerance on parts.

Is your machine under warranty, expect the machine dealer to skin you alive on repair costs.

Not trying to offend anyone, but machines in general were not built to crash. If they were, they would come with ABS, side-curtain air bags, knee bags, and traction control. If you crash it, you suffer the consequences. Both our Mini Mill and our SL-10 have not been crashed. The Mini is 2 years old and our SL is 1 year old. But I am the owner, the setup guy, and the operator. Basically, our machines are taken care of. Used definitely, but not abused.

In fact, the service tech was out from Gerotech, (our HFO), to do an 11 month inspection on our SL and found that he couldn't get the DI he was using (0.0001" indicating) didn't move for either axis when checking for backlash. Despite the fact that at that time, the machine had over 292,000 tool changes and run more than 73,000 parts. Oh BTW, our machines get waxed once a week!

I agree with Gizmo 100%
These machine or any for that matter aren't made to crash---I ran Mori's and haas---and whatever---I will say this i have seen brand new SL & NL mori's crashed and never maintain what they were. I opened a CNC machine shop and i have sl30's, VF-550 mill, and also a sl-40 i recently just purchase---I have been in business now for 2 years--I don't let my machines get crashed---I do all the programming and have trained my operators the way i wanted them to learn--I worked at another facilty for 18 years and all they did was wreck brand new Mori's---constantly had to work on them--so i will say this-- the sl30's are pretty and can take pretty abusive machining--but take care of them--mine are still hoding tolerances within .0002 most of the time--I do nothing but oil field manufacturing-- they can take it---been impressed
