Question TL-1 Toolroom lathe

I've read about the TL-1 toolroom lathe. Found it interesting....
What's the pros and cons of this type of lathe?

Well, the lathe is no diffrent from the larger HAAS lathes when it comes to full cnc.

the lathe has a slightly diffrent controll software. (it has more of a graphical interface..kind of like visual quick code, only diffrent)

It will help a manual machinist make the transition from manual to cnc a lot easier.

The chuck is manual.

The machine is open, thus it can make a big mess.

The machine is well built.

let me know if you have any specific questions.

Thanx for the info!
1) What's semi automatic mode?
2) Please elaborate on the built in machining cycles.
3) Visual Quick Code programming, please elaborate.

The semi automatic mode:
one example: If you want to chamfer a part manually, you can setup the angle, then lock the x and z axis together (electronically). When you move the x axis with the manual handwheel, the z axis will feed at the same time, thus making the tool travel at the angle you setup.
(im sure that there are other semi auto uses, but im not an operator. just a mechanic)

The built in machining cycles:
HAAS calls this 'INTUITIVE TURNING'
The screens show a blueprint of a generic part, and all that you do is fill in the blanks with dimentions, tool info, feeds and speeds. Just manually touch the part to setup the offsets. Punch the big green button.
The cycles included are:
chamfer and radius
drill and tap
thread
grooving
turn and face

Visual quick code:
A software add on that you can get with the HAAS machines.
It basically a pictures, and fill in the blanks way to make g code from the controll. Similar to the 'intuitive turning' mentioned above (maybe not as refined)

You can learn a lot on the HAAS website : www.haascnc.com

Hey Klox, Go to the Haas website and request the TL-1 video. It will show you how everything works. If you can't get it from them, maybe I can get you one and send it to you.

Spoke to my local Haas Dealer this morning. They are going to hold a inhouse exhibition next week.
I'll go have a look at the lathe.....

Klox,

I just wanted to let you know that I have two Haas machines. Service and support has been wonderful. The HFO applications manager in my area is a genius with CNC and CAD/CAM. That makes a huge difference. Also, form a good relationship with your Haas rep and service. They will always be there when you need them.

As far as the machines, I have a SL-30 Big Bore lathe that is two years old and a VF-5/50 VMC was just delivered two days ago. They have great performance and the easiest control on the market. I wouldn't trade them for anything!! In fact, I hope that I can get a TL-2 within the next 3-4 months to pick up the simple jobs.

One piece of advice, keep the carriage out of the chuck and everythig will be OK!

Wow, I forgot how small this world really is. I guess it is a good thing I didn't have anything bad to say about Darren!!
