    Threading on ST30 problem??

i'm doing a thread on an ST30, the thread finishes part way down a diameter (no under cut to run into).

Do i need to run M23 code and what value for setting 95 and 96??

i've tried running M24, but the tool comes to dead stop and creates an under cut (and looks bad!)

    any help please?

    thanks Jim

Yes, you need M23 to turn on Chamfering. It should be on by default when you turn on the machine, but if you've programmed a M24 you'll need to program M23 again.

Setting 95 = number of "leads" to chamfer out. (0 to 29.999) I would try 1 to start.
    Setting 96 = chamfering angle. (0 to 89 degrees - no decimal point). Try 45 or 60.

You also need to watch your rpm. If you are running too fast the machine simply cannot pull out fast enough.

Incidentally, even though it is often done, just running a thread down a diameter and stopping with a pull out is not always the best design especially if the thread will experience a bending or cyclic load. It is always better from a fatigue resistance point of view to end a thread in a radiused undercut.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

    thank you.

i was running a bit fast (1600 rpm), i'll see how i get on in the morning!

It's the first thread that doesn't end in an under cut on these Haas lathes.

Incidentally, i've done threads up to 3" x 3.5 BSW without any problems.

    I'll post what happens!

    thanks again
