    Haas policy???

I have a Haas TL1 lathe. Although it has done very little work for what ever reason an x axis servo drive expired. At much expense I purchased one from the Australian agent and fitted it myself as fortunately they were at a trade show otherwise the cost would have been much greater.
I was going to look at having the old drive repaired if possible and have it as a spare on the shelf as I do a lot of work outside normal hours and if another expires I can replace it asap.
I was informed by the agent that it is Haas policy that the expired drive must be returned to them for evaluation.

They agent tells me it is for research and development but I think it is to stop you having them repaired and then not having to by new ones all the time.

Does anyone know whether this is Haas policy or just the Australian agent policy. As I own the drive and not one piece of paper work on the contract seems to point this policy out I think it is rude of Haas if this is indeed their policy. As a one man company any way to save money is a good way.

It is my understanding up here that Haas will give a credit for the defective unit that is returned. In other words you can keep it but that will just cost you more money for the repair.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

The policy is, you are billed double for your part. Whatever it is. Even if its something stupid like way cover gaskets. Once you send that part back you get credited that amount back. They do this for one reason only: to make having spares simply not economically feasible. Then your a slave to their service vans.

You can still have a spare by buying another one, just tell them you want to two units, to keep one as a spare. I can understand why Haas wants the failed parts back for analysis. Haas push so much information out on their website, and there such a large knowledgeable user base online, I don't think they are the type to keep things secretive or prohibitively expensive to deny the small guys a chance to attempt diy repair.

This is the same for Fanuc and Mitsubishi parts that are repairable. In fact it is the same for car parts in the USA that are repairable. It is a core charge and the manufacture used these to fix and sale to the customer. Mazak in there warranty if you read it states that any part changed out in warranty will be a repaired item not new. This is to help keep the warranty cost down. I am sure Haas is the same way. You keep a drive and that is one less they can use on a warranty or service machine.
