Once you have the drives configured, they do not need to be connected to a computer.
While I was working on mine, I sometimes used a laptop, just so I did not string cables everywhere.

I'm thinking of buying one of these drives to control a linear motor. I have lots of computers, but they are all running Linux or Mac OS. It seems that the configuration tool is limited to Windows.
Yet it seems to communicate via a serial interface.
Is it possible to do the drive configuration using a serial console application instead of the GD Tool GUI?
Alternatively, is there a version of the config tool that is not limited to Windows OS?

Tuning software is tested to run properly under Linux and Mac computers when running Windows on virtualization software such as VirtualBox, VMware or Parallels. For example I have Ubuntu + VirtualBox (with USB support) running WinXP and GDtool. Seems to work flawlessly.
However, even when the whole thing runs on Linux, also this way it requires some version of Windows.
Just for grins, I downloaded the GD tool and tried it under Wine.
It seemed to install and run OK, but I don't have a drive or a USB adapter, so it says 'not connected' . Can't really tell if it would work when I connect a drive.
I wonder if that's a viable solution.
Since USB drivers are required, I doubt wine would not work without significant efforts. It may be much easier to borrow a windows laptop from a friend.
Thanks. I decided to try it with Wine, and if that doesn't work, I'll buy a license for Windows XP, and install it on one of my Linux boxes as a dual boot.
