It Moves!

Finally-

I am able to move my plasma cutter. After I was able to move the servos, and the overcurrent faults stopped happening, I decided to re-installed the VSDEPI board. It also works!!!!

Nothing moves until I tell it to. All the e-stops work. All the limit switches work.

The last item is to order new encoders. I ordered the 1250 cpr encoders, because I planned on using the SmoothStepper, but stuff changed.

I am using the BOB from Candcnc.com, because the digital torch height controller.

I am thinking about ordering some adjustable encoders from AMT. Is being adjustable something I need? I am just checking all options before I spend even more $$$.

Once my ballscrew gets delivered, I will upload a video of it moving.

I'm not sure what drive you are using, but I saw in the VSD-E manual there is a built in step multiplier/divider (1 to 32767). That should allow you to use the encoders you already have, shouldn't it?

Steve - complete newbie here, just looking into new VSD-E drives...

Stevespo-

That is a good idea! I will play around with the settings and see what happens/

I will let you know what happens.

Congratulations Steve! I'd be glad to see the video once ready

Use VSD-E scalig to overcome the limitation of CNC software step pulse frequency.

Servo benefits from high resolution encoder. So if you have adjustable encoder, set its resolution to maximum, and if necssary adjust drive scaling to achieve full speed.

Xerxes,

Please post screen shots of settings and detailed instructions on how to adjust drive scaling.

Thank You

Jeff...

Scaling can be adjusted from Trajectory planner page. Just adjust the multiplier. If a special scaling ratio is required, like 3.141 then you may also adjust divider (3.141 = 3141:1000).

Ok-

Time for an update. I have everything moving, but if I move it to fast I get "Following errors" The video that I uploaded is running about 300 ipm.

I have the following errors set at 1000, does anyone know if that is a good number or should it be set higher?

In the trajectory planner, I changed the ratio from 50 : 50 to
300 : 100

Nice video!

1000 should be enough, so the problem is elsewhere. Try doing fast moves under GDtool to find out why the error grows so much. You can use moveinc somevalue command in Event log to move motor manually. Two most common reasons:
-Position controller gains need adjusting
-Supply voltage is limiting motor speed

Tero-

When I tune my Servos, should I have the pinions engaged into the rack?

For the supply is limiting the voltage, I am using 3 1000 watt power supplys from Anteck, and all three are tied together. Would I need to install a large capacitor?

Yes.

And the watts don't matter much, but voltage.

Tero-

can you explain more what you meant by the voltage?

Is is the voltage to the power supplies, the voltage from the power supplies to the VSD-E's, or the voltage from the VSD-E's to the motors?

Power supply voltage. Please see drive manual for more explanations about this.
