I am looking into using the cnc machine as a lathe also or milling things in the round.
This setup fits nicely in the front of my table, could be setup to work with 5in dia by 50in long piece of material

from mock up in wood to a rockwell

I was going to sell my rockwell lathe until i found that i could raise my router and use the rockwell at the front of my table.
But it still an uphill battle getting parts and getting this done. The setting up of the lathe went well but to drive it now is another story, cogged belts and pulley don't seem to like the front end of a wood lathe as the shaft is 1in x8pt left hand thread.
But here is how it looks

If you are just looking for round work, then you can power up the lathe. Should work fine. Doubtful it will be faster than cutting by hand though. You could rig up a make shift dividing head for positioning flutes. I have done this by hand in a home made jig and a router before. It's got to be easier with your machine.

Stepper motor would make it much nicer and broaden you horizons though. The concept does work fine though. This is typical 4th axis machining I think.
