    slate for bar billiard table

I'm planning to build a bar billiard table (http://www.mastersgames.com/cat/pub/bar-billiards.htm) with a slate bed.

I have a 3 axis CNC machine with cutting footprint of 1200mm*800mm*200mm made of mild steel with 3 * 637ozin steppers.

    How would I:

    a) grind the slate to a good finish (I am presuming I would have to replace the router with a die grinder or something). Would I rough cut, then polish cut using a die grinder?? What is the best tool for the job?

    b) cut circular holes within the slate (bar billiards has holes within the slate and not around the edge as per pool / snooker, etc.

Finally, do I have to use slate and if so why do I have to use slate??

I appreciate that my machine is such that the slate would have to be ground flat in sections unless I increase the footprint of the machine (possible but not desirable at this point)

Andy I don't know if the same material is available over in Aus., but here in the states you can buy the slate in pieces that come already surfaced and pre-drilled for mounting holes. The joints are grouted to make a complete surface that is smooth and free of imperfections. I had a site bookmarked but I don't know if I still have it or not. If I can find it, I'll link it for you.

Mike that's a good thought thanks.

I never thought that it would be available in sections. There are table manufacturers in Melbourne so I'll give them a call. Hope they don't make me squeal with their prices lol

I do still need to know how to cut circular holes in slate and possibly cut sections to size.

I've just checked on ebay for used pool tables. Bar billiard tables are 6ft * 3ft. I reckon I can pick up a battered table and rescue the slate.

How does anyone think I would cut the hole and cut the slate to size?

a lot of tables in the US are made in three sections. I believe they get leveled, bolted down, and then the seams and the bolt holes get filled with some type of a hot wax. Melt the wax with a 3 inch putty/drywall knife. Then sometype of a spray adhesive and felt

As far as cutting the holes, I think it can be done. I'd talk to a granite cutting place. But they probably use diamond tipped tooling and lots of water...

I would be curious to see how in tact the steel is.
