Hi Guy's, I have a ABS routing job coming up. I need to cut about an inch deep pocket about 3"x4" with a couple features in it. In the past I have not had much luck with. From what I have read it looks like HSS single or double fluted cutters with fast feed rate? Anyone have any other tips for me? Thanks, Ferny. |

| abs likes to gum up at high speeds with typical end mill style cutters. plastics, in my experience, behave much better when cut with router bits. single or double flute, straight. the other key component would be getting your chipload set correctly! with the two dialed in you can produce parts with no melting, gumming, fogging, nothing!! |

Thanks Mister! I made a few test cuts today at 20, 30, and 40 IPM and they all worked. The swarf from the faster cuts shot off much better. I'm at the lowest spindle speed of 5000 RPM? with a 1/4" carbide double helix bit. I also have a couple air streams directed at the bit. I just need to work on the plunge speed to keep from birds nesting. In the mean time the project manager decided he wants to change the part design...again. Thanks again! Ferny. |

| HA! managers.... well i am glad that helped. for the plunge try stepping down gradually. enter the material about .125 and back out then another .125 and so on. this will allow the material to be spat out avoiding the giant birdnest upon entry! the air streams are a huge bonus! if you need a really clean finish you can mist the bit with air and soapy water! works sonders for acrylic and polycarbonate! Anytime! Garrett |
