Default Is there a way to machine (facing) concrete?

    Hi all,

I have concrete cylinders that are for compression and tensile testing. In order for them to be tested the concrete must be perpendicular on each end to the "side" of the cylinder. Is there a way to face the ends of the cylinder? I was thinking about PCD inserts but I am worried about blowing up my tooling when I hit rocks and such things in the concrete. The inserts in question are nearly $800 for a set and I can't really blow up $800. I don't even know if concrete is machinable.

    Thanks!

The technology already exists and is very low-tech. A concrete block saw with some kind of vice will hold and cut them perfectly square on the ends. They utilise a blade of around 14" diameter, have a foot-treddle for applying pressure to the cut and a sliding table for back& forth motion.

A simple tile saw should cut the ends.

It would in principle but tiles saws use blades that are too small to cut your average 4" test core, and the motors are quite low powered in comparison.

Put a diamond concrete blade on a cutoff saw. Might require a water stream, but I think some of them are designed to cut dry.

I thought you cast end caps on the test cylinders out of sulfur before putting it in a testing machine. Compression only. If you contact a soils lab they should have all the equipment you need.
