Power Supply - Linear or Swiching?

    Greetings.

For a Plasma CNC cutting system, if both Power Supply had the same output
voltage and power, which power supply would you use?

    Linear:

The cheapest one Dennis. The switcher probably has current limiting to protect itself and downstream components. You can add external bulk capacitors to dampen the gain loop for running non-linear loads with a switcher. A lot don't even need that.

The linear may cost a bit more, but are more rugged, if the switching one dies, they can be tricky to repair, you only have to lose one and then the linear cost would be ahead.
Another advantage is that if it has a Toriodal transformer, auxiliary windings are very easy to add, again lowering the overall cost.
