Direct drive motors (to the pinion) or belt reduction?
Hi.
I'm getting noticable vibration from the rack and pinion. Mod 1 rack 15mm square. engaging with 23 t mod 1 pinion. the pinion is sprung loaded into the rack.
Any one with any tips or tricks to quieten this down.

2.75 reduction, I think a possible cause is poor quality rack?
Normally a lot of the vibration comes from the motors and mechanical links. Turn the motors off and slide the axis by hand and feel for vibration Bad pinion mesh should show up as you move.
If you have a gantry wider than 36" and only driving one side then consider the possibility of binding from racking.
unhook motors from belts and jog them at different speeds. If you are using microstepping drives the rotation should be nice and smooth. If it grinds or vibrates the motors then either the drivers are a POS or your step polarity in MACH is wrong.
If you have the velocity set too high for your driver/motor/belt reduction then you could be losing steps that will cause motors to run rough.
If you are using MACh then Windows, background services can bit you and cause a ragged pulse stream (or one that has periodic bumps you can hear.
If you have the correct pitch (distance between teeth AND the pressure angle matches between the pinion gear and the rack, it should run pretty smooth if the driving force is turning smooth.

Hi Adscnc,
unrelated to this topic but you should have a private message from me asking about that severe bevel problem you posted about a while back. I was wondering if you found out what was causing it.
Cheers,
Keith.
torch had been involved in a collision so was a little bent, replaced it and was all okay,
