Question I need some large razor blades. Like old-school Gillette, only much bigger.

Hi guys,

Like the title says, I need some blades that are very sharp and very thin (0.004") just like the double edge razor blades still on the market today. The problem with these however is that the standard (and only) size is 1.7", which is about half the length I need.

If anyone knows of something longer, but not thicker, please let me know. Otherwise I'm interested in how to make some or have some made, if that's possible at all without specialized equipment.

Thank you!

Thumbs up

Thank you, I checked out their website and the closest match was a 2.36" long blade (just long enough) but slightly thicker than what I had in mind - 0.006" vs 0.004. I'll give them a try; hopefully they'll slide right in.

Thanks again!

Why not ask them how much it cost for a custom blade?

I ordered a box of the 0.006" ones and will see how well they behave. Because a custom order always tends to be lengthy and expensive, I'll try the grinding first.

Oh well, they don't have that in stock.

Where could I get some 0.004" thin steel sheet or tape? I would break it in 3" pieces and sharpen one edge. Should do the job.

Not knowing how many you need, you can buy the scaper ones at home depot and surface grind them down. They make them pretty long and if I remember correctly they are angled heavy on one side the other side is very light. Meaning you can just surface grind one side and still get down to your .004-.006 size.
I think I have seen them up to 4" long?

That doesn't sound like a bad approach at all; any ideas (or threads about) how to improvise some surface grinding on a 3-Axis CNC mill? That's all I have :-(
