I am new to machine shop work. I am interested in it to satisfy some artistic ambition that I have. I currently do not own a lathe and I want to learn more about them before I make the plunge. Background: I want to build a device that resembles a large steam guage from a railroad engine. I believe that the outside of the guage can be machined from 6061 Al tube and is basicly a turning operation. This guage will have an approximate outside diameter of 7.5 inches. it will be approximately 4 inches deep. The only external machining would be to provide a good finish on the piece. This is the biggest part that I will have occasion to build for the next several projects (if ever). Questions: What size of lathe would I need to be able to do this successfully? Do any readers have other information or suggestions that a newby might need to know on this particular subject? I will appreciate any help that you can throw my way. |
