As I do not much about metals my expertise is in wood. I have build DIY CNC router using 3/4x3/4x1/8 hot rolled steel (I believe a-36) on which roll my no.2 V bearings. After some time I started develop wearing which makes me believe that it will be inconsistent thus accuracy of my machine will suffer. I do not have local source for cold rolled which I believe would be more suitable for that purpose. I can purchase same angle to replace it made in Angle 304 Stainless Steel, Annealed & Pickled. Would that be a better choice with more strength and less wear? |

| Here's some info on the properties of each: http://www.fanagalo.co.za/tech/tech_grade_304.htm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A36_steel I would suspect that running a hardened bearing on either of these materials would cause them to wear over time - probably even at the same rates. Maybe look at getting some linear rails to replace? |
