What about black oxide? Or the bluing techniques gunsmiths use. Black oxide done to MIL spec is extremely durable, the m-16 machine guns are dragged through the mud, etc. and still polish up nicely. Some Starrett tools have a beautiful marbled-looking oxide treatment, I have not yet mastered this technique, but would like to know how to repeatedly get results like theirs!!
OIL!
Wax may be another temporary solution.
Again the gunsmiths and gun-shops deal with this similar issue, they sell some good penetrating oils that last a long time.
