    Newbie question, please help

I just recently purchased a 9 x 20 lathe. I would like to make a cone or funnel for lack of better description. I need to taper down from 1" to 1.5" and needs to be 2" long. Is this possible on my lathe? It is not a CNC. Any help on how to start this project would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Sure, you can do that Dave,
Just adjust the compound rest to the desired angle and feed/cut with it and use the cross slide only to increase the cut for the next pass.

What angle that would be is your problem

Try a piece of dowel rod for testing the angle.

Dave, as Ken said, you can do that. Just move the compound from the horizontal zero clockwise to the angle you need. I drew it up in SolidWorks, and the angle came out 7.13 degrees. (The angle between one side of the part and the centerline.) I don't know how accurate you need the part to be, but 7 degrees ought to get you close. You'll need a little over 2" of travel on your compound, probably not an issue on your machine.

you would need to use trig to figure out the angle but when you get the angle put it in on the compound. Make sure you have the compound the way you wnat your angle or else you will have an angle backwards. think about it it is a little tricky but if you think you will get it.

    good luck

You probably already know this but your stock will need to be a couple of inches long so you can grip it in the chuck behind where the end of the taper will be. then when the taper is turned you will need to part it off at the correct length.

I don't know what a "R8 taper" is but I am making a ball joint adaptor. It will adapt smaller ball joints to fit in a larger hole for custom suspension applications.

Thanks for the help, I will try to figure out how to do it.

Regarding the angle, it is just a simple right triangle.

The taper amount is 1 - 0.5 =0.5. One leg of the right triangle is 2" the other is half the taper, 0.25"

The anwer is the ASIN[(0.25")/2") = 7.18 degrees.

Don't own a lathe yet, but love to read everyones solutions.

Interesting. Seen those for my Cherokee for doing High-Steer set-ups.
Post pictures when you get it done!

It should be the ATAN as you are given both legs of the right triangle, but not the hypotenuse.

    Yes ATAN. Sorry about that.

I should know better than to make that mistake.

Any body intersted in making these adaptors if I send you one to copy? I would be glad to pay for them. I made one but not out of good material. I just made one for "mock up purposes." I need about 10 of them, all the same.
