    nOOb Question

I have a pre-hardened .558" Dia rod that I need to put some 1/2"-13 threads on. Is it possible to do this with a die or would I have to get the dia turned down??

Thanks for the help on what probably is a basic question

Do not try using a die if you want to have quality threads. That is way to much stock to remove. Turn to proper dia then single point threads to remove most of the material. Once you have rough threads about .015 over pitch diameter then chase with the die. Best quality would be to finish with the single point tool.

What material is it and what hardness is it?

Valenite just launched a grade of turning, grooving and threading inserts that work exceptionally well in stainless steels, high-temp alloys and steels over 42Rc, their VP9605.
