I will be making some RC boat rudders out of 6061 Aluminum in the near future. The part is 6" long and 1.15 front to back. The wall is .12 thick in the front and .010 thick in back(3 degrees per side). Any ideas how to get a good finish on such a thin part? I was thinking of leaving extra stock lengthwise and clamping both ends in a fixture for the 1st side, then flipping the part lengthwise and bolting a 3 degree shim to the fixture to support underneath for the last cut. I have not had to mill anything this flimsy before and any suggestions are welcome. Thanks,Maz |

| Do you have CNC? You can mill the whole part from a solid block. Work from the thin end down. Mill a little on one side and then do the same thing on the other until you work your way all the way down. The idea is that the extra stock supports the piece as you cut your way down. There is a million ways to do it depending on the tools that you've go. Would be nice to see a model/drawing of the part. |
