    Thumbs up

    John,

Very nice work, it looks like a rendering!

You did a fine job, John!...your wife should be pleased!
Pictures doesn't show complexity of the whole mechanism.
It would be nice to see some detail of part's.
Picture doesn't show the bottom of ring.

Thanks for the compliments guys, I really appreciate it.

Konrad. My website has a couple more pictures. THe hinge shot is on the main page.
I decided to keep the mechanism design to myself although if someone is dying to make one, I'd help them if they needed it. I'd rather people figure out their own cool design and come back here and show us. Most of the fun is figuring out how to make it work.

It was all machined from solid bar on a Haas VF2 4axis.

When I talked about the cutters being nearly the diameter of a human hair, it was a bit of an exaggeration. The smallest end mill I used was 1/64th .0156 . I couldn't think of anything to compare the diameter of the end mill to so I just said, "nearly the diameter of a human hair." I wrote it for non machinists that don't speak our language.

For the record, they do make .005" diameter endmills. The smallest I've used is .008".
It's pretty amazing that they work at all. I work at a medical device company so I'm used to using the small stuff. After a while it's like anything else, you get used to it.

I can't quite remember, but I think they make .001" drills. Maybe it's .003".... Amazing they can make those things. A .010" drill under the microscope looks just like a normal size drill. I have no idea how they make them.

Like any thing, they make them very carefully.

It seems somwhat insane but you can get endmills well under 0.005".

WOW, you can get .0002 endmills!

I should send them an email and ask for .0005 extended length rougher. I've got to hog out some big .003X.003 pockets.

    John,
That is a very nice piece of work

I like the click open idea to make the ring easy to put on/take off

Now, wouldn't it be nice to be able to see the diamond when the ring is closed? Perhaps a semicircular cutout around the part line? Of course I cannot see the mechanism inside.
First you get good, then you get fast. Then grouchiness sets in.

(Note: The opinions expressed in this post are my own and are not necessarily those of CNCzone and its management)

I kind of like the idea that it is hidden to all but those you want to see it.
