Hey, So on my Haas TM-1 I've got the option of using ER-16, ER-32 or a Cat 40 to Morse taper adapter for folding my drills. if i'm using smaller drills I imagine i would just put a Drill Chuck into the Morse Taper adapter. Is there any reason to prefer one methed over the other or will my results always end up being the same?

Doesn't really matter what you hold them with; I find that a rapid into the side of the vise will fold them every time ![]() I hold small drills with collets because at 6000 rpm (machine's maximum), my drill chuck is not balanced enough. A drill chuck is more versatile because of it's wide clamping range, so I would keep one on hand for larger drill bits. It really depends on what material you're drilling and what the drill's rated SFM in that material is. That will give you your RPM. Then, if it's over the rating of the drill chuck, use collets. Also, I find that my drill chucks have a lot more runout than collets, so when the drawing calls for a precise hole, I will use a collet even if the drill chuck is rated for the RPM. Chris Kirchen |
