Hi guys. I'm an amateur blacksmith and knifemaker, and I recently acquired an very cool, small, bench top surface grinder that I think will be very useful. Trouble is, I don't have any formal instruction or experience using this type of grinder, and am looking for a quick basic primer. I assume this small machine was designed to use without coolant, but would like to confirm that's okay. Also, not sure about protocol with respect to depth of cut, whether it's preferable to grind by moving the workpiece forward or backward, and whether that are any particular issues with respect to truing the wheel, etc. Anyone know of a good basic text or article on this stuff, or failing that, is anyone out there willing to take a few minutes to transmit some wisdom/experience to a newbie? TIA. |

| Wear safety glasses. Keep hands away from wheel. Roll up sleeves or keep them buttoned at the wrist. Do you know how to test a wheel for cracks? Do you know which direction the wheel should turn? Do you know how to properly mount a wheel on its adapter? Do you know the speed of the spindle? Do you know the safe operating speed of your wheels? Gene |

| get a hold of a grade 11 or 12 machine text, it have a chapter covering all the basics. dry grinding is fine, but take it slow and its a good idea to wear and mask and cover up machine tools as way more crap is thrown around than with wet |
